Try not to give energy to the negative aspects about your body or your appearance. It just wears you down and after all, half the time the things you dislike about yourself no one else even sees. See yourself like your dog sees you. Your dog loves you unconditionally, with absolutely no judgment at all. He or she sees the inner you, so let that inner you shine!
If you highlight the best parts about yourself, you won’t have to worry about constantly hiding your insecure parts. Small things like, beautiful hands; roll up your sleeves, wear striking bracelets, have fun with rings, or paint your nails with interesting designs.
- Pretty Feet; Roll up your pants to below your calf, wear killer shoes, keep your feet manicured, and wear unique sandals.
- Beautiful décolleté; wear collared tops, look for “V” necklines or interesting necklines to frame your gorgeous décolleté.
- Small waist and curves; don’t hide your curves, belt your outfits, and emphasize your smaller waistline.
- Gorgeous hair; try to keep it clean and nicely blown out, wear it down as often as you can.
- Slender legs; show them off with fitted or structured pants.
First meet Lana, she’s 32 years old. She’s a relief worker who most recently was deployed in Nepal by International Medical Corpse.. There she helped to establish the organization’s mission in Kathmandu. Before the earthquakes in Nepal she was a part of the response team working out of Los Angeles to support West Africa’s struggle with Ebola.
When I first sat down with her, her hands were trembling and was extremely nervous. She said that she had always wanted to do something like this but was always too self-conscious. Being that she is curvy and petite (5 ft) it’s a struggle to find things that fit her and she wasn’t sure if this would work.
We sipped hot tea and I asked her my favorite question “What do you like best about yourself?” Her reply was soft and unsure, “My hair?”
“Yes!” I exclaimed. Lana has great hair, but she also has these amazing eyes and a beautiful smile. She is cute and petite with a kind soul that exudes from her. My mission was to figure out how to help people see Lana for who she was, a heart of gold who was beautiful inside and out.
First we picked a pair of jeans. Because of her curves, we went for a pair of Rag and Bone jeans that were straight legged but not too wide and not too tightI chose the vibrant yellow/green blouse that was able to accent her personality. I gave her a soft suede and knit jacket by Vince, to synch her waist. She chose to wore a strappy shoe because she had just had a pedicure, but she could have also worn a slightly pointed boot with a stacked heel, which is great for petite people as it draws the eye out adds length to your leg. Lana also saw a hat that she was dying to try out, and when she put it on it perfectly framed her face so we added that to her outfit as well.
Then we looked for a dress for those special evening occasions. Again, I looked for something that had color. Color helps to express your energy, your mood, and your soul; those magical bits inside you. This deep Amethyst color really made Lana feel sexy. She had a sultry look and it gave her the confidence she needed. The dress is structured and the fabric is firm that way it’s flattering and her curves shape the dress beautifully.
Shannon is super cool looking with this great gap in her teeth and a body like a model. I was so confused as to why she needed my help. After spending 5 minutes with her, I realized she felt super awkward in her outfits and she lacked feeling grounded. Shannon is a 30-year-old artist, but she finds it difficult to find outfits for her very small and straight frame.
In Shannon’s case, we have to create volume. Something I don’t have to do very often. I gave Shannon some fitted and destressed J-Brand Jeans. In Shannon’s case I dressed her in black and gray, those colors tend to have weight and grounded her making her feel more powerful. I gave her a gray leather moto jacket by Joie and added some fun and funky rings to play up her creative side. She was so happy with her look when the camera started rolling she was literally jumping for joy. She was no longer the shy artist but instead ready to kick some ass!
Kim is a mother of three. Her eldest is 7 years old and the youngest is 2. So she’s constantly on the go! Having had her babies so close to each other she was feeling a bit drained and frumpy. She misses the days of wearing beautiful outfits and going out on dates with her hubby.
The biggest myth about being a stay at home mom, is that you have to wear your workout clothes all day to be hands on and practical. I see more and more women out there wearing yoga clothes all day long. They might be comfortable but they definitely don’t make you feel great, nor do they empower you to get through your day. I love to work with mothers, after all, I am a mother and I remember the first 2 years of my daughter’s life I nursed her. It seemed like forever and it always felt like I was constantly feeding her. I get it, I understand the need to be comfortable but you can achieve this without wearing your Lulu Lemon’s and tennis shoes.
Invest in great, fun flat shoes, ballet flats or warm boots for the winter. There are so many soft tops by a variety of different brands, like Velvet, Michael Stars, Vince, Joie, and Splendid. All of these are easy to wash, they’re comfortable and easy to move in but fit better than a baggy T-shirt and saggy sweater.
For mothers who are constantly on the go, it’s important to layer your outfits as you never know when you’ll get too hot chasing after your kids in the park, or if you’ll have a second to meet a friend for coffee. Also, grabbing a scarf or accessory can polish your outfit nicely!
